CHAPTER 15

SAM SPADE

Lance Mewling would not face justice. I had to accept that. I had to move on. His deluded followers were still out there, but hopefully, they’d find other conspiracy theories to occupy themselves.

And there would be no one telling them to kill members of The Memory Guild.

The police were still investigating the attempts on the Guild members. They finally located and arrested Gloria’s strangler. Her first attacker, the guy strapped with too much gear, was also in jail, as was James’ attacker, Diego’s attempted bomber, and the driver for the man who shot at me. Dr. Noordlun’s attempted killer became chum after going through the shrimp processing machine.

It was an impressive show of force to convince this many men to kill people for you, especially if, according to the driver’s memories, you’re not paying them. Maybe, that’s where the supernatural came in.

In any event, they were all incompetent, except for the person who strangled Gloria and almost finished the job. Monique sounded competent, and most likely would have killed me if she hadn’t been off her game after she accidentally killed her husband. Sure, the others were enthusiastic, but that wasn’t enough. Mewling got what he paid for.

I could try to locate the gunman who shot at me, but I had grown tired of playing amateur detective. I’ll let Lepore hunt him down. I needed to focus on the inn and the constant repairs and renovations that come with the territory, when you buy an almost 300-year-old building.

I also needed to step up my marketing. I couldn’t survive if thirty-six percent occupancy was a good day. I was learning how to do internet advertising, but it would be great if a prestigious travel magazine featured the inn. Yeah, right. Dream on.

Meanwhile, I prepared for a Mr. Sam Spade to arrive from Crescent City, Florida. He had booked the Princess Suite online and would arrive today.

I’d never had single male guests staying on their own before. Perhaps, he had a partner he didn’t mention in the online form. Also, the Princess Suite, with its pink wallpaper and Chippendale-style furniture, was an odd choice for a guy, regardless of his sexual orientation. But who was I to question a paying customer, even if he was staying for only two nights?

Julie freshened up the linens in the suite, Room 204. She also dusted and vacuumed, which weren't needed, but I asked her to do it, anyway. I busied myself with the breakfast service, the one amenity that all guests took advantage of. After I cleaned up, the inn was ready. Clean and sparkling with the scent of old polished wood, a pleasant mustiness of old drapes, and the warmth of butter and baked goods.

A loud rumble came from Cadiz Street, the side street where the main entrance was located. There was a length along the curb of no parking, where guests could pull up to unload luggage before finding a parking spot elsewhere.

I looked out the window. An old pickup on monster tires idled by the entrance, belching exhaust.
